Why can't I sleep? Find your kind of wakefulness.
This may be mental or emotional arousal — the day has not been closed. Work, an unfinished argument, or the only quiet hour you get can all keep the file open. It is often not a sign that you have forgotten how to sleep.
You've found your pattern. The book explains why it happens and what to do about it.

How this works
People say “I can't sleep” as if it were one problem. It usually isn't. Tired-but-not-sleepy is a timing issue more often than a willpower issue. A mind that will not close is different from a body that still feels switched on. Waking through the night has a long list of ordinary causes. Waking too early, sleeping enough hours and still feeling spent, or fear of the night itself each point somewhere else.
This tool asks which of those is closest, then a few follow-ups, then a short check for patterns that deserve a professional conversation rather than another habit tip. The experiments it offers are starting points: one thing to try tonight, and at most a couple for the week. They are not a treatment plan.
Nothing here names a disease. If loud snoring, gasping, severe sleepiness, or months of nights that wreck your days are in the picture, the useful next step is a qualified assessment. The rest is permission to run a small, calm experiment instead of collecting more rules.
Questions people ask
- Why do I wake up at 3 AM?
- Early-night sleep is often deeper; the second half is lighter and easier to break. Alcohol, light, temperature, stress and an early-shifted clock are common reasons. One early wake is an event. A pattern that lasts, especially with low mood, is worth a medical conversation.
- Why am I tired but can't sleep?
- Tired and sleepy are not the same. You can be exhausted while your body clock is still in go-mode, or after a late nap has spent the sleepiness you needed. Waiting for actual sleepiness, with a steady wake time, is a useful first experiment.
- Is this tool a diagnosis?
- No. It is an educational starting point. It cannot tell you what you have, and it is not a substitute for a doctor, a sleep clinic or a therapist.
- When should I see a doctor about sleep?
- When nights are frequent and affecting your days for about three months, when you snore loudly or gasp, when you are drowsy in situations that need you alert, or when mood, medicines or another condition seem to be driving the pattern.
This tool is educational, not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Persistent or severe sleep problems deserve a qualified medical assessment.
